Glossary

0-10 V

The 0-10v standard is used as a voltage based reference in many applications. Whilst most known as a dimming mechanism for various light sources it is also extensively used by stage lighting desks and volume control. As an input source it is often used as an analogue reference for temperature, humidity, light and other sensors.

DAB

Digital Audio Broadcasting is a broadcast technology used in the UK for digital radio. The UK was the first country to transmit a wide range of stations in the early 2000's. The benefit of DAB is improved sound quality in most cases and a greater choice of radio stations, particularly for rural locations. DAB also transmits additional data typically showing current radio show information or currently playing song etc.

DALI

Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. DALI allows for two way communication between a light fitting and controller. For example, the controller sends out a command - 70% brightness, the light fitting responds and dims to 70% and also sends back a command confirming current status or lamp fault. This is achieved by means of addressing, in a DALI installation each light fitting has a unique address, much like addressable fire alarms. DALI is an open protocol standard administered by DALI AG in Germany.

DVB

Digital Video Broadcasting refers to the broadcast standard for TV stations in Europe. The DVB-T and DVB-T2 refer to UHF based transmissions for both free-to-air and pay TV. DVB-S and DVB-S2 are the digital satellite equivalent of DVB-T and DVB-T2. They are used by FreeSat, SKY and various other satellite broadcasters. DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 are updated protocols which support high-definition content delivery.

DVI

The Digital Visual Interface is electronically compatible with HDMI and the two standards are often used interchangably. DVI connectors are typically found on computer equipment. DVI thus enables the transmission of high-definition video signals as well as the various high-resolution computer monitor signal standards. DVI differs from HDMI in that it can transmit analogue as well as digital signals as well as dual digital monitor signals. DVI connectors come in DVI-D, DVI-A, DVI-I and DVI-D illustrating the various permutations of signals transmitted.
